The church for Sacred Heart Parish in Shawano, Wisconsin, was built in the early 1950s just a decade before Vatican II. The building has a processional style layout typical for that era, with the fellowship hall in the lower level of the church. One significant need was for handicapped accessibility to both the lower and upper levels of the school. The building committee, through its educational process, made a recommendation to the parish that a gathering space be developed for their expansion plans. In addition, a Phase II project would be developed that would re-orientate the space for a more gathered seating arrangement. Another problem with the plan and site conditions was the use of five different entrances to the nave space. The gathering space would help bring the majority of people into a central space before entering the nave. The existing "main" entrance of the church will be closed and replaced with a stained glass window, while the alcove created there will become a shrine area.
