St. Edward Catholic Community, situated three miles due north of Appleton, was in need of a new church to replace the century-old one that had become too small.
The parish cemetery being an important part of the St. Edward parish community; they wanted the nave to be oriented to the cemetery. A rural parish with many farmers, the church was designed as an octagon similar to some of the round barns of Wisconsin. The present seating capacity is 600 with two future expansion wings provided for in the master plan.
